Ballina is a town in North County Mayo, Ireland. It is the largest town in County Mayo, with a
population of up to 15,000 people. It is situated on the River Moy near Killala Bay, which are popular
for fishing and sight-seeing. Some local trips that students will go on include the Achill Islands, Killala
Quay and attractions such as museums and forest walks..
It was founded in 1723 as it started out as a thriving and market based town on the River Moy in the
16 th Century. The towns market heritage remains in the vibrant shopping streets. It is home to a host
of cultural and modern treasures through books, maps and museums. The former president of
Ireland, Mary Robinson, was born in Ballina.
Popular Attractions
​Belleek Castle Museum includes a tour of the castle and stories of its history. Historic sites such as
Rosserk Friary and Moyne Abbey is a point of interest for all. Belleek Woods include a scenic walk
along the river. The famous Ridge Pool is a popular tourist attraction. Lacken, Ross and Enniscrone
beaches surround the town of Ballina. Killala Bay is famous for deep sea fishing and the River Moy is
recognised as a world famous salmon fishing river.
